
Sarah Carmichael taught English in the UK, Spain, the Chinese mainland, and Sweden before coming to Hong Kong with the British Council in 1989. She has been working at HKUST since 1993, and has taught nearly all of the English courses offered to HKUST students by the Center for Language Education, as well as being involved in various other CLE initiatives such as MBA classes in Shenzhen, IELTS examination advising and the development of short courses on pronunciation. She lead the development of English courses for engineering undergraduates. Currently she plays a leading role in curriculum management and development across the whole CLE.
Professional Interests
Her academic interests focus on discourse analysis, genre, English for Specific Purposes and curriculum development. Other language related interests include language rights, teacher training in rural areas and language teaching for capacity-building among staff in community organisations.
