Functional Cantonese I for Students with Non-Chinese Backgrounds

Course Description

This is an innovative Cantonese course designed for English speaking students who have no knowledge of the Cantonese language. With a focus on speaking and listening skills, the course aims at building up participants’ proficiency and confidence in using Cantonese for daily communication. Through a communicative and functional approach, and the use of interactive activities and online learning, it will help participants to acquire vocabulary and basic structures in real-life situations.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to

  • converse in Cantonese in everyday situations;
  • acquire knowledge of the Cantonese phonological and tonal systems; and
  • learn about elements of Chinese culture.
