Course Description

This course follows on from LANG 1123 (Chinese for Non-Chinese Language Background Students IV), designed for UG and RPG students of non-Chinese language background, who have already learned Chinese for four our semesters or about 200 hours. Students who wish to take this course must satisfy the prerequisite of LANG 1123 or its equivalence.
Building on LANG1123, the course aims:

  • to further enhance students’ confidence and competence in Chinese communication through practice with particular emphasis on both oral and written communications involving fair demanding language structures, functions, and situations, and more advanced comprehensive listening, speaking, reading and writing skills training;
  • to help them further develop listening and speaking skills for communicating in Putonghua for social, professional and business purposes through a range of learning activities; and
  • to further enhance their reading and writing skills through different learning tasks and learning activities.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • understand the expressions of climate, architecture, culinary culture and the local customs etc.
  • understand other’s Chinese learning experience
  • understand other’s internet experience; communicate with others on online topic
  • understand the expressions of personal character traits and abilities
  • understand the questions in mock recruitment interviews
  • offer opinions on learning Chinese
  • present one’s favorite city and give reasons to friends
  • engage in more detailed discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of surfing the internet
  • narrate personal strengths and challenges in the job market
  • present the future plan
  • retrieve key information from an expository text on customs, festivals and city development
  • retrieve key information from a narrative text on the influence of Internet
  • write your personal activities and views on surfing Internet
  • write how you will prepare for future opportunities and challenges

    Students are expected to attend classes, and attendance will be taken. There is no need for students to provide any written documentation in case of your absence. Any student who is absent for 20% of total classroom contact hours will receive a fail grade (The attendance of add/drop period also count). Being late consistently will also negatively affect the final grade.
