Course Description
English Communication for Humanities and Social Science Studies I (LANG2070) is a three-credit course offered in the spring semester to students of the School of Humanities and Social Science. LANG2070 is an integrated skills course with a special emphasis on critical reading and thinking. It develops students’ ability to understand the nuances of English vocabulary and assimilate different sources of information for analysis and commentary. The course also hones students’ skills in giving effective academic presentations.
Approach, focus and structure
This course adopts a skill-based approach, focusing on developing skills important to Humanities and Social Science students, namely:
- critical reading and thinking,
- academic writing,
- seminar presentation and discussion, and
- vocabulary acquisition.
Texts
A range of texts of different genres, oral and written (from sources such as academic books and journals, newspapers, magazines, video clips) will be used.
Themes
Themes for the seminar and research paper will be broadly related to subjects on humanities and social science subjects, and of current interest.
Critical reading
Students will learn to go beyond reading comprehension, to interact with a text, compare text with text, distinguish fact from opinion, and make inferences.
Vocabulary
To become more proficient readers and writers, students need strong decoding skills and vocabulary acquisition strategies. students will learn how to use reference books to assist their vocabulary learning.
