Course Description

LANG 3021, Science Communication in English (Mathematics), is a three-credit course offered to third-year students in Maths. Over one semester, students will attend three hours of class and will be expected to complete up to three hours of out-of-class work per week. The course focusses on two overarching themes:

  1. Science communication and story-telling
  2. You will gain an understanding of the importance of science communication and the role of story-telling therein, developing the skills to effectively analyse popular science articles and presentations aimed at the general public, as well as to use appropriate strategies to make your own science communication – writing and speaking – accessible and interesting to lay audiences.

  3. Communicating controversy in Maths
  4. You will gain an understanding of public attitudes to and controversies in Maths and how such controversies are presented in speech and in writing, developing the skills to critically read and write about – as well as present – scientific controversies in an accessible and interesting way to lay audiences.
