Science Communication in English (Environmental Science / Ocean Science)

Course Description

LANG 3025, Science Communication in English (Environmental Science / Ocean Science), is a three-credit course offered to third-year students in Environmental science. Over one semester, students will attend three hours of class and will be expected to complete up to three hours of out-of-class work per week. The course focusses on two overarching themes:

  1. Science communication and story-telling
  2. You will gain an understanding of the importance of science communication and the role of story-telling therein, developing the skills to effectively analyse popular science articles and presentations aimed at the general public, as well as to use appropriate strategies to make your own science communication – writing and speaking – accessible and interesting to lay audiences.

  3. Communicating controversy in Environmental science
  4. You will gain a good understanding of controversies in Environmental science and how such controversies are presented in speech and in writing. You will learn the skills to speak and write about scientific controversies in an accessible and interesting way to lay audiences.
