Service Nature

How can I benefit from an Advising session?

Advising is a one-to-one service with which you can enjoy personalized advice on your language problems.

The Adviser can help you at any stage of your language work – understanding the assignment task, planning your academic essay or presentation, organizing an outline, as well as supporting you to improve your written work and Powerpoint slides. Come when you need help.

Can I ask my Adviser to proofread my work?

Advisers will not proofread or edit your work. They help you to become a better editor for your own work by highlighting the language issues you should pay attention to.  Simply speaking, helping you to help yourself.

Registration

What can I do to get the most out of the Advising session?

Choose an Adviser and time slot that best suit you.

All our Advisers are experienced and qualified language teachers who are ready to provide you with professional support. Each has their expertise and interest in specific language areas which you can refer to by clicking the Adviser name or Adviser Profiles.

When completing the registration form, be specific about the question or problem you wish the Adviser to assist you with. They more they understand your problem, the better they can help.

How many Advising sessions can I book?  When?

You can book a maximum of two 30-minute sessions per week. These sessions can be on separate days or consecutively lasting for a total of 60 minutes. Plan your bookings according to your own need.

At most, you can reserve 4 bookings in the three weeks ahead.  At the 72nd hour before a session, registration for it will be closed so that time-wise, the Advisor can prepare to meet you.

How can I register for a group advising session with my friends, like LANG1003 Discussion Practice?

LANG1003 Discussion Practice is designed for a team of three. When you register, you need to input the names and email addresses of the two accompanying students. Do have all the information ready before hand. Then, you just need to use the same registration link.

Attendance Policy

What if I fail to attend or am late to an Advising session?

If you are absent or more than 10 minutes late in attending the Advising session, you will be banned from using the Advising service for 4 weeks. We need to ensure that all the manpower and resources allocated for serving students are well used.

The policy is based on the understanding that you can cancel an appointment due to any change in your personal schedule.  Please read the 2 FAQs below for more details.

What if I am sick on the day of my Advising appointment?

If you cannot attend the appointment on the day due to sickness, send a request within 24 hours of your appointment time to apply for waiving the penalty. You need to attach a scanned copy of your doctor’s certificate to your Adviser and cc to lcadvise@ust.hk

Any justified and document-supported request may help to waive the 4-week ban from using our service. The Advising Team will make the final decision.

Can I cancel my Advising appointment?

Yes, you can.  Do so once you are aware of your unexpected schedule clash through the online booking system.

Failure to cancel the appointment 24 hours prior will result in a 4-week ban from using the service.

Preparation

How do I prepare for my Advising appointment?

Be ready to explain your needs to the Adviser, and arrive punctually at the venue as specified in the confirmation email.  You can then effectively use the session time.

Bring two hard copies of related materials which you will discuss with your Adviser, e.g. a paper, an essay / presentation outline, PowerPoint slides, or the task instructions.

How do I prepare for my ONLINE Advising appointment?

ALL advising sessions in Spring 2021 will be conducted online.

Therefore, you are strongly encouraged to email any materials (e.g. an essay draft, a presentation outline, PowerPoint slides, and/or the task description) to your Adviser 2 working days before your session. This is to ensure that you can avoid the technical problems while uploading materials, and can then maximize your time during the Advising session.

You should also make sure you have stable internet connection and a working camera and microphone.

As with face-to-face Advising, be punctual with entering the Advising session as specified in the confirmation email.

Hope to see you in our Advising rooms. You are welcome to contact us for further assistance at lcadvise@ust.hk.
