Students are often uncertain about how to avoid committing the very serious offense of plagiarizing in their academic writing. This workshop will focus on how to recognize what is considered to be plagiarism and how you can use citation and referencing skills correctly so you never have to worry about being accused of plagiarizing. This is also a skill that will be applicable to the writing required in many workplaces where writers are asked to use information from sources other than themselves.
By the end of the workshop, you should be able to
- articulate what plagiarism is and how to avoid it
- explain the differences between citations and references
- summarize relevant main ideas in your own words
- use effective verbs to introduce your summaries
- give credit to your sources through accurate use of citations and referencing
