Language Skills for Job Seeking


Objectives

This short course will help you develop the language and communication skills necessary for successful job applications and employment interviews in the Hong Kong context.

 

On completion of the course, you are expected to:

 

 

Writing skills ― Résumé/Cover letter/Application form

  • identify the common grammatical and formatting errors, and clichés in résumés, cover letters and answers in application forms
  • use appropriate language in cover letters, résumés and application forms
  • present the most relevant qualifications, experience and expertise, in an appropriately structured and formatted résumé, to justify your suitability for a particular post
  • highlight the most relevant and important details cohesively and coherently in an appropriately formatted cover letter to justify your suitability for a particular post
  • give answers to the questions in a job application form to justify your suitability for a particular post

Speaking skills

  • answer the interviewers’ questions appropriately with relevant details
  • apply the recommended strategies to handle difficult questions that the interviewers may ask
  • ask the interviewers sensible questions to demonstrate interest in the post and company
  • use appropriate body language to enhance communication with the interviewers, and to establish a professional image

Maximum Number of Participants 18 participants
Fee $500 (refundable)
Remarks This course is not appropriate for students who will take or have taken the following courses:
LANG 201/3069 – Business Communication
LANG 206/2049 – “Real Challenge” module
LANG 308/3028 – “On Your Marks” module
