Make Your Words Count: Use of Adverbials in Academic Writing


Writers often reveal their attitudes and stances through using adverbials, either at word or phrase level.However, the importance of adverbial is often overlooked, being perceived as nothing more than adverbs such as “happily”, “carefully” and “correctly”. This workshop provides you with an opportunity to look into the general aspects of stance adverbs, and its application into academic writing.

 
Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, you should be able to

  1. Understand the function of stance adverbials
  2. Identify types of stance adverbials expressing different attitudes, stances and emotions
  3. Communicate effectively through using adverbs
  4. Apply stance adverbials in different situations
  5. Refine your own writings using stance adverbials, make it more concise and readable
