“Theme” and “Rheme” are two terms which represent the way in which information is distributed in a sentence. Theme (or the so-called Topic) is given information that serves as “the point of departure” of a message. Rheme (or the so-called Comment) is the remainder of the message in the sentence in which Theme is developed. Understanding Theme and Rheme will help you analyze the cohesion among sentences and empower you to write coherently.
By the end of the workshop, you should be able to
- identify common problems with sentence cohesion
- recognise Theme and Rheme through studying examples of well-connected sentences
- analyse the cohesion between sentences by identifying themes and rhemes
- practise writing sentences with appropriate themes and rhemes
- improve the cohesion of your own writing
