Tone and Level of Formality in Business Letter Writing

Tone and Level of Formality in Business Letter Writing aims at helping you develop skills to meet the challenge of communicating effectively in business letters. You will find it most helpful if you aspire to work in business and management.

You will examine the principles of effective communication from sample letters of request, positive and negative replies to request, letters of complaint and adjustment letters. In-class writing exercises will help you learn to use appropriate language to craft the tone and level of formality you desire for your writing tasks.

On completion of the course, students are expected to:
  • define the goals in writing a business letter
  • analyse the target audience’s needs
  • identify how the tone and level of formality of the sample letters are influenced by elements of effective communication, which include the writer’s goals, the writer-reader relationship, the selection of ideas and the organization of ideas
