Have you ever wondered why Japanese katakana words sound so different from their original English counterparts? Have you noticed the distinct styles of Japanese in writing, speech, and across genres? Have you ever been puzzled by the indirectness of your Japanese friends when they respond to your offers, leaving you unsure if they meant ‘yes’ or ‘no’? These are all intriguing linguistic phenomena that can be systematically analyzed.
