  • Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary
    Shows definitions as well as etymological information. The definitions may not be very easy to understand though.

  • The Elements of Style
    This is the full-text on-line version of William Strunk’s book, which is widely recognized as a classic reference book of plain English style.
  • The American Heritage Book of English Usage
    A practical guide to English style, with individual chapters devoted to grammar, style, diction, word formation, gender, scientific forms, etc.
