At the Center for Language Education (CLE), we believe that strong language, communication, and cultural competencies are not just academic requirements, but lifelong assets: for the careers our students will build, the communities they will belong to, and the ideas they will help shape. In a world that keeps shifting, the ability to adapt — linguistically, communicatively, culturally — is as important as any single skill we teach.
As part of the School of Humanities and Social Science, CLE equips HKUST students with the linguistic and communicative range, and the cultural fluency, to hold their own in academic, professional, and global settings. We offer a comprehensive suite of English, Chinese, and Third-language programmes, taught by faculty who are leaders in their field, bringing strong expertise in language education, and a genuine investment in student growth. Our curriculum spans academic and professional communication— and we also place emphasis on experiential engagement, giving students opportunities to put their skills into practice through real-world tasks, language and cultural exchange, and hands-on collaboration.
We are also proud to be at the forefront of Human-AI Orchestrated language education, and we see this as only the beginning. Guided by our Human-AI Orchestration framework and approach — where technology amplifies human judgment and creativity rather than replacing them — CLE is developing new courses, platforms, projects and partnerships that prepare our students not just for the world as it is, but for the one they will help build. Language education, for us, is a living discipline: one that evolves alongside the people and technologies it serves.
