CLE AI-Powered Apps for Language Education
We are developing AI-powered apps that help you practise communication, build confidence, and learn beyond class time. These tools are created with students and guided by our instructors, so they are grounded in both student needs and sound teaching practice.
Each app focuses on a specific communication challenge, from Putonghua speaking to daily English practice and professional speaking tasks.
Utter
This app helps you build spoken English through flexible daily practice matched to your level. With speech recognition and immediate pronunciation feedback, it gives you a practical way to improve fluency and confidence outside class.
It is designed for students across disciplines and stages of study. You can use it to make speaking practice a regular habit, even when you only have a short amount of time.
Podium
This platform helps you prepare for speaking situations that matter for academic and career success. You can rehearse job interviews, business pitches, and professional presentations in realistic simulations.
As you practise, you receive personalised AI-driven feedback and insights. This helps you improve your delivery, build confidence, and prepare for moments where clear communication matters most.
XiYouQuest
XiYouQuest makes Putonghua speaking practice easier to start, repeat, and sustain. Designed for HKUST students and inspired by Journey to the West, the web-based platform turns Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC)-related preparation into short, repeatable missions that lead learners from listening and reading to speaking aloud. Learners can focus on pronunciation, tones, syllable accuracy, passage-reading fluency, and prompted speaking; receive AI-supported feedback; retry immediately; and see progress build over time. The story-led journey gives repeated rehearsal a clear purpose, while the flexible, lower-pressure format extends practice beyond limited class contact hours. XiYouQuest supports learners in building confidence and readiness for PSC-related tasks in a formative practice environment.
Meli
Meli is a teaching-support tool that helps instructors identify student needs earlier and improve courses over time. It brings together useful signals from before, during, and after class so support can be offered before small problems become bigger barriers.
