Knowledge Transfer

Through various KT initiatives, we have extended access to quality language learning, strengthened educator capacity, and provided richer communication opportunities for learners at different stages. 

 

 

Learning League 

 

Learning League is a Quality Education Fund (QEF)–supported service-learning initiative that delivers CLE-designed language programmes to local schools. This initiative has broadened access to research-informed English language learning across Hong Kong’s school sector. Since 2013, CLE-designed programmes under this initiative have reached more than 30 primary and secondary schools, offering structured support to English-as-a-foreign-language learners who might otherwise have limited exposure to extended English communication. 

 

The initiative has also created a durable bridge between HKUST and local schools. Hundreds of HKUST students have taken part as tutors and co-educators, contributing to school-based language provision while developing their own communication and leadership skills in authentic classrooms. In 2026, the initiative expanded to include a One-Day University Experience Programme for secondary school students, widening the horizons of what “English learning” can look like for the next generation. 

 

 

Global Englishes AI-assisted Virtual Reality Learning System (GAVIS) 

 

GAVIS is a QEF-funded project that combines AI-driven assessment, personalised feedback, mobile learning, and virtual reality tasks to support English speaking in Hong Kong schools. Since 2023, the system has been implemented in 38 primary and secondary schools, supporting more than 200 educators and engaging 740 students in 2025 alone. 

Its impact lies in enabling schools to offer immersive, feedback-rich speaking practice that reflects diverse English use, without requiring specialised infrastructure in every classroom. Teachers gain access to a managed ecosystem of tasks, analytics, and support, while students encounter forms of speaking practice that move beyond traditional textbook-based exercises. GAVIS thus serves as a proof of concept for how AI-enhanced, VR-supported learning can be integrated into mainstream schooling in a sustainable way.

Events and Public Engagement 

 

CLE supports cultural and linguistic engagement beyond formal classes through a range of events and public activities. Putonghua Day, jointly organised with the Hong Kong Language Studies Center, provides a recurring space for school learners, families, and international students to engage with Chinese language and culture. In 2026, the event drew nearly 200 participants across age groups and used game-based, immersive, and technology-enhanced activities to support Putonghua practice in a structured, collaborative environment. 

 

CLE’s work is also shared through professional and public showcases. Participation in the Learning & Teaching Expo (LTE) contributes to ongoing discussions on language pedagogy, AI-enhanced learning, and multimodal communication, with demonstrations that emphasise both tools and the teaching practices and partnerships that underpin them. 

 

Initiatives such as the “Critical Reading and Writing Skills with GenAI” MOOC on Coursera extend CLE’s work to learners and educators outside Hong Kong. Community-facing activities, including the GenAI Hackathon showcases, provide contexts where student projects and educational innovations are presented to wider audiences.
