English in the Age of AI

English in the Age of AI

English in the Age of AI was a seven-day project course for senior secondary and pre-university students, developed through a collaboration between the Center for Language Education (CLE) and the HKUST AI Literacy Hub (AILH). A distinctive feature of the course was its near-peer teaching model: HKUST undergraduates served as tutors and mentors, working alongside a CLE instructor to guide participants through the programme.

Participants addressed the driving question: How can we use AI to create an English learning tool or game that is fun, accurate, and genuinely useful for real users? Over the week, teams worked through the core tasks of identifying real language problems, collecting their own data, prompting, building, testing, presenting, and reporting, ultimately creating a working AI-assisted English learning tool or game built through a "human-in-the-loop" design cycle.

HKUST student tutors were central to this process. By mentoring project teams, facilitating discussions, providing feedback on language and prompt design, and coaching teams towards their final presentations, they further developed their own leadership, communication, and AI literacy skills.
