Cantonese, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish courses are offered as free electives and are available at different proficiency levels. Students must select a course that matches their existing language ability and previous learning experience. 

Which course level should I choose? 

Review the course description, target students, and prerequisites before enrolling. 

• Level 1 courses (course codes beginning with LANG1XXX) are intended for complete beginners or students with only the limited prior knowledge specified in the course description. 

• Level 2 and higher-level courses (course codes beginning with LANG2XXX or above) are intended for students who have completed the relevant prerequisite course or attained an equivalent level of proficiency. 

Students should not enrol in a course below their current proficiency level. 

How do I know if I am choosing the right level? 

Students enrolling in Level 1 or Level 2 courses are required to: 

1. complete a language-background self-declaration form; and/or 

2. take a pre-course proficiency test. 

The test is used to confirm that the selected course is appropriate. Students whose proficiency does not match the course entry level may be advised or required to transfer to another course or withdraw. 

What happens if I provide inaccurate information? 

Students must provide complete and truthful information about their language background. Enrolling in a beginners’ or lower-level course under false pretences may be considered a breach of academic integrity. This includes withholding previous learning experience, misrepresenting proficiency or providing false information in a declaration or pre-course test. 

A student who is later found to have entered the course with proficiency above the permitted entry level may receive an F grade for the course, subject to applicable University regulations and procedures. 

What happens if I am enrolled at the wrong level? 

• During the add/drop period: You may be advised or required to transfer to a more suitable course or drop the course. 

• After the add/drop period: You may be advised to consider applying for a late drop and will be directed to the relevant University procedures. 

What should I do if I am unsure? 

Contact the relevant course instructor before enrolling. You may be asked to provide details of your previous study, qualifications and experience using the language.
