Language Events

Introduction

The Center for Language Education offers the “Chinese Language Buddy Program (CLBP)”, which aims to encourage the confidence and frequent use of Putonghua among HKUST students through an inclusive and fun language learning environment. Through joining various fun group gatherings organized by your “Buddy” (a student leader fluent in Chinese) throughout the semester, you can make friends from different places, learn about diverse cultures, practice speaking in relaxing environments, and boost your confidence in speaking Chinese.

People Involved

Buddies:

• Proficient in Chinese (Putonghua)
• Possess the attributes of mentoring participants and passion in sharing their native language with participants
• Give participants continued support and guidance on their quest for higher Chinese (Putonghua) proficiency
• Help organize 3 tailor-made gatherings to encourage participants to actively use Chinese (Putonghua) with confidence

Participants:

• Interested in learning and improving their Chinese (Putonghua)
• Participate actively in all gatherings

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

• Enhance their pronunciation, grammar, and build vocabulary of Chinese (Putonghua)
• Accumulate the daily-used Chinese (Putonghua) expression in different social contexts
• Increase their confidence to speak in Chinese (Putonghua)
• Make friends from different places and know more about diverse cultures

Groups 

One buddy leading a group of 4-8 participants who would like to learn and practice Chinese (Putonghua).

Gathering Requirements

• Program duration: September 5 - November 21
• Number of gathering: 3 gatherings
• Suggested hours of each gathering: At least 2 hours per gathering (determined by each team in terms of length and frequency of each gathering)
• All participants are required to attend 3 gatherings
